I was a hobby baker for at least 4 years before I took the plunge to register with my local council – and boy, was it a big step for me. It felt daunting, overwhelming, and very “real” all at once.
At the time, I was already working as a part-time secondary school teacher, teaching Design Technology and Catering, but my real passion was always baking. I subscribed to cake decorating magazines to get free tools, followed endless YouTube tutorials, and became completely hooked on learning new cake decorating skills. I baked birthday cakes for family and friends, donated cupcakes to charity events, and often just baked for the pure joy of it.
Eventually, enquiries started coming in from the public, and I knew that if I wanted to turn this into something more, I needed to make it official and register my business.
I had the knowledge needed to pass an Environmental Health Officer inspection, and I had already completed my Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate through my teaching role. But what I didn’t have was someone to guide me through the reality of starting and running a cake business. It took time to find my feet, but I did it.
Today, I run a successful wedding cake business – Primrose Cakes – from my home, providing me with a sustainable income and the ability to reinvest into my business with ease.
I was a finalist at the Suffolk Small Business Awards in 2024, a finalist for Business Coach of the Year 2025 at the D’licious Magazine Awards, and a finalist for the East of England Wedding Industry Awards 2026. I am also a recommended supplier for three venues in my area and regularly network within the wedding industry.
I love to stay immersed in the industry and continually invest in my development by attending events and learning from others. WedPro’s Live 2026 was a standout experience and a brilliant reminder of how fast this industry evolves.
I am also in close contact with the Food Standards Agency regarding food safety matters and have contributed feedback towards their Floristry & Food Guidance document ahead of its release.
More than anything, I am passionate about helping other cake makers build businesses that feel sustainable, profitable, and aligned with their life. It can be a lonely world being a cake maker, and I want to create a space that feels supportive, honest, and grounded in real experience.
